Hilary Stewart’s Death

Our world is diminished without Hilary Stewart to protect and teach us of all things wild and beautiful.  Her contributions to the understanding of native art is unparalleled, and she designed logos for Nature Vancouver and for the Wreck Beach Preservation Society.

Hilary loved Wreck Beach and was raised as a naturist in England after her parents moved there from India. We are still trying to persuade Metro Vancouver to honour the name we bestowed on the unnamed creek now variously referred to as Salish or Acadia Creek, but which as of 1981 did not have a name.

When we set the clothing-optional boundaries for Wreck Beach with the then Attorney General, we christened the creek as HIlary’s Creek and have been attempting to solidify that for the past several years.

Hilary was bright, warm, funny, a wonderful artist and with her eye for detail, explained so much about both the natural world and our Salish Sea First Nations peoples.

She will be deeply missed.  We all loved her at Wreck Beach.  We will always cherish her memory.  Born in 1924, Hilary was 90 years old at her recent passing.  Memorium services were held June 21 at the Quadra Island Community Centre.
